Teaching Statement: The Space Between Whether teaching contemporary, ballet, jazz, improvisation or some fusion of a few techniques, I always have my eyes on relationship, the space between. Whether the distance between the knee and elbow, between one person and another, or the relationship of inner imagery to its visible effect on the moving body, I cultivate awareness. As a teacher, I offer classes thoughtfully structured to lead participants through warmup, elements of technique, improvisation where appropriate, and learning phrase work. Always looking to connect mind and body and expand dance vocabulary. My aim is for students to investigate physical textures and the power of intention as equally as experiencing the sensation of healthy alignment and powerful efficiency, so we can enjoy the range of dynamics in any dance technique or style.

A Class Description for: Dance Languages - Contemporary Dance Class with Victoria McConnell
Victoria’s class is a collage of influences drawn from her technical training, her diverse performance experience, from deepening improv explorations, and from her own creative practice of choreography and writing. Aiming for engaged senses and stronger connections between mind and body, the movement flavors and technical vocabulary of the class encompass elements from yoga to contemporary improvisation, with a nod toward modern dance and many other things in between.
Beginning with guided improvisations Victoria’s class will get blood flowing, awaken the skin’s sensation, and invite the brain and the body to arrive in the space. Moving in and out of the floor with more structured exercises, we activate the core and large muscle groups while exploring the head-tail connection and the body’s edge versus center. Eating the space with spirals, floorwork and turns, we progress across the space using improvisation tasks and simple phrases to integrate sensation and detail with larger movements. Bringing the various elements together, the class culminates in learning some phrase-work and developing it further with the particular focus of that day’s class, whether it be spirals or activating an animalistic efficiency while moving.
